Henry’s dinner crowd had passed by 8pm on Friday night; however, a few minutes after we had arrived, people started to file in for the nighttime shift. A fairly small bar, Henry’s has low-top tables in the main and side game room as well as high-top seats at the bar. The decor is very cute and old-timey just as Henry’s is on an adorably classic street amongst several businesses like a movie theater and favorite brunch locale, Cafe Hollander, as well as many historic homes.

Though the bar was busy with only one waiter/bartender, we received drinks relatively IMG_8163quickly, and in a few minutes, our food arrived. We ordered cheese curds, which had a light-medium breading, and were white, creamy, and tasty. As for the fish dinners, we had decided to try the cod, perch, and shrimp.

The cod and perch had a medium batter which was crunchy and had good flavor. The batter had just the

right amount of breadiness, was chunky and not greasy. The shrimp were also breaded and full of substance. The fries

were fairly thin cut andIMG_8161 had a good seasoning on them; the tots, however, were pretty bland. We also enjoyed Henry’s unique coleslaw; it was a mayo-based slaw but had bits of cranberry and onion that added a lot to its overall effect. The side salads were also a good size and very green.

Henry’s was a fun stop in an eclectic part ofMilwaukee. The food, atmosphere, and service were a success!

Lake Hallie Golf Club has a gorgeous golf course as well as view of the course from their IMG_8099outdoor patio. On a Friday night, the restaurant, and likely the links, were quite busy. The hostess brought us to our table on the patio, and we quickly received a basket of dinner rolls and water. Promptly, the waitress came for our order, and while we waited for our cheese curd appetizer, we enjoyed the lovely temperature and ambiance.

The cheese curds arrived very quickly. They had a medium-light colored batter and were fairly standard Wisconsin curds, cheesy on the inside but not runny. Despite their usualness, however, we found them to be just great! The homemade ranch dipping sauce was also a perfect match, runny and delicious.

IMG_8101Next the waitress brought our side salads. The salad was a good size and very green. There were tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded cheese, and croutons to add to the flavor. IMG_8102The fish came out soon after; service at the Club was perfect: very quick and very

IMG_8103attentive. The fish was lightly beer battered in such a way that the batter seemed almost more like a breading; they call it “dry battered.” It was a seasoned batter, and the fish was very moist, flaky, and had a nice crunch from the batter. Each piece was a thick filet. The sides were also well done; the coleslaw was mayo-based but contained just the right amount of moisture with a hint of horseradish. The au gratin potatoes were baked fresh

IMG_8104and very hot. They were delicious, very cheesy and so tasty. The fries were crinkle cut, well cooked, salty, and crunchy.

In addition, we tried the cheese fries. Each pizza fry had large chunks of garlic and was very flavorful on a thin crust with IMG_8105marinara dipping sauce. Overall, Lake Hallie Golf had a great setting, great food, and great service! It was a win all around, and we highly recommend.

Dooley’s Pub

Dooley’s is a pretty popular college student destination on Water Street, and even though it’s the summer, it was still pretty busy on

IMG_8043Friday around 5. We found a table, and a waitress came over soon after to take our order. Dooley’s has booths, low-top tables, and seats at the bar. There is also seating upstairs as well as in the back room.

We started with cheese curds which arrived to our table quickly. Large blocks of cheese, Dooley’s curds come in cheddar and pepper jack, were melted all the way through, and had a light batter. We ordered half cheddar, half pepper jack, and greatly enjoyed them both.

Next, the fish arrived. The meal was of a good size with four pieces and large amount of
shoestring-cut fries. The fish had a medium batter, was very bland, and tasted and looked as if it had been purchased frozen and pre battered. The potatoes were full of potato and had a light red seasoning on some. The coleslaw was lightly creamy and had aIMG_8044 hint of horseradish, which was nice.

Overall, we don’t feel that Dooley’s is a good choice for a Friday fish fry; however, their cheese curds were a hit, and the bar is very spacious with a lot of options on tap and by the bottle.
