The Sheeley House has undergone a lot of change within the last few years including a few drafts of their menu. Having not been since the new menu emerged, we were intrigued by what we could see of the menu online and wanted to try out their Friday fish fry. Walking in, the restaurant was fairly busy with seating available in high top seats, seats at the bar, IMG_6843and upstairs seating. We were lucky to get a table in the front window where we could watch the town as well as the bar. The waitress told us to pick our seats and arrived shortly after to take our drink order. We also ordered Yellowstone cheese curds to start.

Our curds arrived in just a few minutes. Each small, yellow curd was coated in a very light batter; the curds were reminiscent of fair curds, though they were not as greasy (or tasty) what you’d expect from the fair. They had a good, clean taste and were served with a unique dill mustard and a chipotle ketchup.

Our fish arrived quickly after our curds. The pan fried fish was coated in a medium-light colored battered. It was very moist on the inside, and the coating often fell off between bites. The green seasoning (parsley, maybe) on top added flavor to the fish, but the batter was relatively tasteless (perhaps a bit off-tasting). The fries were also coated in this strange batter. They were dense with potato but lacked much flavor. The bread-crumbed-crusted perch was heavily coated and crunchy. It was seasoned IMG_6845fairly well, and the Sheeley remoulade sauce – the bar’s substitute for the usual tartar IMG_6844sauce – was a great accompaniment. The remoulade was heavy on the mayo but had a nice horseradish kick. The coleslaw was also very heavy on the mayo, a bit soupy, but had a spicy flavor that was enjoyable. The fish seemed to be prepared well, but overall, the flavors of fish and sides were a bit off-putting and sometimes bland.

The decor in Sheeley House is cute and creates a nice old-time saloon ambiance. The service is good, and the menu did appear to have some things that we would like to try in the future. The fish fry, however, wasn’t our favorite and lacked the main elements that would cause us to return again. We also felt that it was quite overpriced for the amount and enjoyment that it offered.

Yankee Jack’s Public House – CLOSED

  • Date Visited: March 10, 2o17
  • Location: N. Clairement Ave., Eau Claire
  • Restaurant Type: Restaurant
  • Fish Types Offered: deep fried and baked walleye (cod available during the rest of the week)
  • Fish Serving Sizes Offered: 2 (big) piece meals
  • Sides Offered: choice of side (potato wedges or baked potato), coleslaw, and hush puppies
    • Other sides are available but not for substitution.
  • Cost: Over $10

The Public House is a whole new restaurant from the owners of Yankee Jack’s, previously located a Princeton Valley Golf Course. Serving beer and wine (tap and by the bottle) as well as various coffee-house-type beverages, the atmosphere in what used to be Mike’s IMG_6786Smokehouse is definitely inviting and very accommodating. Immediately upon walking in, we saw that, just as like at the Smokehouse, one orders at the counter, chooses a seat, and is served at their table. However, unlike the Smokehouse, the Public House has a bright and fresh appearance that includes seats by the cozy fireplace, cute decor, and an appetizing array of deli cold salads as well as scrumptious desserts by the slice.

There was no line when we walked in a little before 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening, so we IMG_6784ordered right away and filled our water glasses from the adorable spouted water jug. You-fill-pitchers for the taking were also available alongside the jug, which we were very happy to see and grateful for. We took a seat, and literally, one minute later our appetizer of deep fried cheese arrived. The presentation was lovely, and the Wisconsin curds, as the employee taking our order had told us, were delicious. The “curds” are chunks of aged cheddar cheese, beer battered, and deep fried. The curds IMG_6787were cheesy and cooked all the way through, the batter was appetizing, though not overpowering, and the three dipping sauces were a great addition. Ranch, chipotle, and BBQ sauces aided this delicious appetizer well.

Our fish arrived very shortly after the curds. Everything on our plates that should be was very hot and cooked well. The walleye pieces were huge. The baked fish, lightly topped with a ranch seasoning, had good flavor and was IMG_6788very moist. The fried fish was coated in a light, medium colored batter, though the batter wasn’t seasoned and lacked much flavor. The wedges were coated in a delicious batter which had an almost Cajun flavor, and the hush puppies were seasoned well andIMG_6789 added a unique touch to this fish fry. The coleslaw was a vinegar-based slaw (no may0), and the tartar sauce was wonderful, a bit chunky and with a dill flavor.

Though the desserts looked wonderful (lemon cake, peanut butter cupcakes, 7-layer bars, etc.), we were quite full after this large fish fry. The service was great, and the restaurant has a lot of great touches that make this a new and exciting new restaurant for Eau Claire’s eating scene. Though the fish wasn’t our absolute favorite, the tartar sauce and the wedges were excellent and definitely worth a try!

  • Fish Types Offered: deep fried and baked cod
  • Fish Serving Sizes Offered: 3 piece or 5 piece meals
  • Sides Offered: choice of side (French fries, chips, or tater tots) and coleslaw
    • Upgrade your side for an additional charge of $1.50: mac n’ cheese, garlic fries, sweet potato fries, salad, or soup

Bug Eyed Betty’s has definitely been a hoppin’ place in Eau Claire since they opened a couple of years ago. With competitive happy hour deals, outdoor seating, and weekly fun events (bingo on Tuesdays and trivia on Thursdays), there are lots of reasons why Betty’s is popular, and their fish fry can be added to that list.

Upon walking in to Betty’s at 4:30 p.m., the restaurant part of the building was about half full, but the bar was packed. We decided to take the last bar booth available as the atmosphere seemed cozy, and we wanted to be where all the action was. The bar area consisted of booths, high-top tables, and seats at the bar. Sports as well as trivia questions were being broadcasted on the large, front-and-center TV screens.

After being sat by the hostess, a waitress greeted us promptly and brought our drinks to us quickly. We decided to take advantage of happy hour drink and appetizer specials – half off house wine, rail mixers, and beers as well as discounted apps (not including the new street tacos). The house cabernet that we ordered was a decent house wine, and with the happy hour price, you can’t beat the deal; however, the slightly more expensive cab on the menuimg_6762 is really excellent (we’ve had it before) and something we would highly recommend. Our white cheese curds came out quickly and were very hot. They were coated with pretzel crumbs and very gooey on the inside. The pretzel batter was unique and had great flavor,  though the salted caramel BBQ sauce served with the curds wasn’t our favorite. However, we’ve had the curds at Betty’s before and will continue to order them as they are one of our favorite things on the menu.

The waitress was knowledgable about the menu and deals, and after ordering, our food img_6764soon began arriving. We started with a side salad for an additional $3.00. It was a good sized salad topped with croutons,  cheese, diced tomato, cucumber slices, and onion. The honey mustard dressing was great.

Our fish arrived shortly after we had consumed the salad. The baked cod was really flaky, seasoned well, and very moist. The fried was also seasoned, which is relatively unusual for Wisconsin fish fries but very welcomed by us, was thinly coated in a dark batter,  was well cooked, and was not at all too “bready.” Both fish options had great flavor and were prepared well. We greatly enjoyed them.

Accompanying the fish were our sides of beer battered French fries and battered and salted sweet potato fries. The French fries were crisp with a good ratio of batter to potato. The sweet potato fries were excellent; they had an awesome flavor and texture that was sweet img_6765yet salty at the same time. These sweet potato fries are another of our Betty’s favorites, and our guest reviewer, who ordered the veggie burger, also ordered the sweet potato fries and loved them. She is also a repeat sweet potato fries orderer. We’ve also had the veggie burger before; it has an awesome mix of flavors but falls apart very easily. When the bun is grilled perfectly, as it was that night, it helps to keep the burger intact. img_6767

We also enjoyed Betty’s coleslaw. It was crisp (it didn’t seem like it had been sitting in a bucket waiting to be served for hours) and had a pleasant consistency. The slaw was may0-based, but the mayo wasn’t too heavy, and there was a good vinegar flavor that balanced it well. The tartar was also a great mix of flavors; it was quite creamy, but there was enough pickle relish to cut the often overpowering img_6768mayonnaise flavor.

As we were leaving at about 6:00 p.m., the restaurant was in full swing, and the bar had kept up pace. There didn’t appear to be many open seats, which seems to happen often at Betty’s during normal dining hours. During the week, the restaurant offers a lunch buffet for $6.50 which includes salad, pizza, and other assorted hot items (soup and usually another entree). They also boast homemade dessert pizzas and on their regular dessert menu, a delicious chocolate chip skillet cookie with ice cream as well as several cheesecake options. We’ve had the cookie, and it’s great. Betty’s entire menu is quite unique, ranging from pizza to burgers to comfort-food entrees. They aren’t afraid to mix different ingredients together to create new and exciting flavors. We definitely recommend their fish fry, but trivia night is also a favorite of ours – just make sure you arrive early enough to get a table; the place is usually packed!

Randy’s Family Restaurant

  • Date Visited: February 24, 2o17
  • Location: W. MacArthur St., Eau Claire
  • Restaurant Type: Restaurant
  • Fish Types Offered: deep fried and baked cod – both choices available unseasoned, cajun, or lemon peppered
  • Fish Serving Sizes Offered: 2 piece meals
  • Sides Offered: choice of potato (hash browns, lyonnaise potatoes, American fries, mashed potatoes, potato skins, French fries, battered/Cajun seasoned French fries) and choice of soup, side salad, or coleslaw
  • Cost: About $10

Randy’s is an adorable family-run restaurant with a ton of homemade, unique options. Upon walking in, one will notice the old-time diner-feel as well as the shelf of homemade breads and dessert options. As I approached the hostess stand around 4 p.m., I was warmly greeted and taken to my table. Though I was waiting for a couple more to join me, img_6631the waitress was very prompt in getting my drink order and bringing us all a small cup of a Randy’s specialty – warm pudding. She came back shortly after with my decaf coffee (I love ordering coffee at Randy’s because they bring you the cutest carafe to pour your hot coffee from – img_6629I’ve even inquired into purchasing one!) and placed an order for a cheese curd appetizer. My co-fish blogger and that night’s guest reviewer arrived shortly after, and we enjoyed Wisconsin cheese curds within minutes. The curds were yellow cheese andhad a heavy, crunchy batter. They were squeaky, though some of the bigger curds weren’t gooey all the way through.

After this, our meals didn’t take long to arrive. First the waitress brought out our salads. This pre-entree was an average side salad, but I really do enjoy the honey mustard dressing that Randy’s serves; it has great flavor and bit of spice. For the fish, we wanted to try a few different kinds and were pleased that Randy’s offers seasoned (cajun and lemon peppered) deep img_6628fried fish as well as baked, which is unusual (usually seasoned options onlyimg_6632 come in baked varieties). We ordered the plain deep fried, the cajun deep fried, and the baked cajun and lemon pepper, and all of the options were great. The fish was very flaky, hot, and was covered in an appropriate amount of seasoning; it wasn’t overwhelming nor lacking. The battered fish was battered lightly. The potato options were also great. There were so many choices that it was hard to decide which to order, but we really enjoyed the seasonedimg_6633 potato skins and the battered and Cajun seasoned French fries that we chose. Both options were seasoned well and tasty, though the potato skins were pretty light on the inside potato, which was probably to be expected due to their name.

From past experiences, we also know that Randy’s breakfast options are favorites of their diners. Their omelets, pancakes, and traditional morning fare are great, but they also have awesome and unique choices like homemade granola and what they call their “nuts ‘n bolts.” Their salads are also huge and fresh and come with the option of having a mini loaf of homemade, delicious wheat bread. Our guest reviewer ordered the chicken tenders melt and French fries. It was filling and tasty.

The fisimg_6634h meal portion was very large, so I was too full for dessert, even though I really wanted to try a piece of pie or a bar. The service was great, and around 5, the restaurant was really starting to fill up. There were obviously some repeat customers and newbies as well.
